RADIO QUIZ Win the radio quiz on WFMT (98.7 FM) on April 12 or June 7 and the prize FREE DOG EVENTS FREE "How to be safe around dogs" talks IN HYDE PARK ONLY (email for information about cost for talks given in other locations) "How To Be Safe Around Dogs" The "How to Be Safe Around Dogs"/"Be a Tree" talk teaches children the steps to take before they interact with a dog and the best ways to pet a dog. It also teaches the “be at tree” posture which is used to encourage a dog to settle down or go away. Learn the subtle signals dogs use when they are uncomfortable. Most dogs give these signals before they growl or snap. Keep kids and dogs safe, adults can learn and watch for signs of anxiety in the dog and intervene if they see them. "How To Play Safely With Your Dog" This talk reviews how to meet a dog safely, how to tell if your dog wants to play and what to do if an off leash dog approaches you. We demonstrate basic obedience, games to play with your dog and tricks to teach your dog. Finally we show some of the exercises from the canine good citizen test and give you a taste of the variety of dog sports. Once a number of our school dogs have finished level 3 of Sue Ailsby’s 7 levels, we plan to have a working seminar. We hope to have 3 classes of demo dogs: dogs just starting the levels, dogs beginning level 4, and dogs at level 6 and 7. We plan to test Sue’s assertion that level 6 dogs are a month away from a title of their choice. The levels exercises are taught in puppy kindergarten 2 and modules ¾. Here is a quote from the levels website: “When you've completed Level One, you are starting to see that you can communicate with your dog. A Level Three dog has most of the skills he'll need to make a great pet. More to the point, you'll have the skills you need to teach him any further skills specific to your own household. By Level Five, you and your dog are really communicating and already have most of your traveling and public skills as well as many of the behaviours which lead directly into specific skills required for specific sports. You've done a lot of work on attention, teamwork, and duration of behaviours. Level Six and Seven? Well, now you're getting into elite competition and public access dogs. I'm confident that a Level Six dog is a month away from ANY first-level competition title, because she has ALL the unwritten behaviours and many of the written ones down pat. That month is for teaching skills specific to the competition, but the important skills of concentration, teamwork, willingness and ability to learn, looking for results, and understanding that to get what she wants she must figure out what you want and give it to you. These skills are already firmly installed." |
